Kaaswaag Edam

In earlier days Edam cheeses were weighed at the Kaaswaag, in the historical heart of Edam. A visit to the Kaaswaag weighing house and the summer cheese market will take you back to the origin of the world-renowned round cheeses.

The most visited cheese market in the Netherlands is the one in Edam. In July and August, there are folklore demonstrations every Wednesday except the last Wednesday in August due to the Edam Fair. Cheese carriers show how the heavy round Edam cheeses used to be transported on berries – just like they did years ago. This takes place on the square in front of the Kaaswaag, dating from 1778, where the cheese was weighed. The Kaaswaag has a permanent exhibition about the art of making cheese. It goes without saying that you can also sample and purchase cheese here.

Close to the Waag, on Spui 9, you will find Edam's best attraction: The Story Of Edam Cheese. Here you can discover how Edam cheese became world famous. Fun for young and old. Click here for more information.
